Dealine for submissions is May 31, 2007. Submissions must be mailed in either a mini DV or DVD format (mini DV preferred).

Sumter Film Festival - Call for Projects  
 
Francis Ford Coppola prophesized a decade ago that the next masterpiece would be made by a "fat girl in Iowa, with a camcorder." While she might make a film for nothing, she'll likely have a whopper of a long distance bill. 
 
* What: 2007 Sumter Film Festivals  
The city of Sumter is developing a plan to present Three unique video projects during 2007. All four projects will emphasize the creative use of cellular video, digital and standard video technology. 
 
* When: See specific dates for each project listed below  
 
* Where: Screenings will take place at Sumter`s Historic Opera 
House, 21 North Main Street, and throughout Sumter`s newly revitalized downtown area. 
 
* Cost: Most events will have nominal participation and/or

* Project 1: Sumter`s VideoPhone Film Festival. The unique 
festival will feature and celebrate the new and exciting technologies and numerous creative possibilities brought about by the latest generation of Video Mobile phones. The competition will require entrants to submit videos created solely by using videophone technology. This project is open to all residents of southeastern USA, ages 14 years and above.

AFI DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY TARGET TO OPEN IN DALLAS
Ten Days and Nights of International Cinema-March 22 – April 1, 2007

A new and exciting citywide annual international film festival was announced today at Victory Plaza. The AFI Dallas International Film Festival presented by Target with founding sponsor Victory Park will be held March 22 through April 1, 2007. Spanning 10 days and nights with 150 feature films and shorts, its more than 200 screenings will make it one of the largest film festivals in the Southwest. The comprehensive programming will include the very best of contemporary international features, documentaries and short films. The festival will be punctuated with red-carpet galas, receptions and special screenings accessible through family-friendly outdoor viewings. In record time the AFI Dallas International Film Festival has raised $3.5 million in cash and in kind gifts from sponsors and Dallas philanthropists. “The AFI Dallas International Film Festival is a result of Dallas’s love of film and filmmakers,” said Michael Cain, festival artistic director. “We welcome this opportunity to work with the Dallas film and film festival community to bring the international cinema spotlight on Dallas. It is also gratifying to have Liener Temerlin, the founder but to also have him as our chairman. He was the originator of the concept of the AFI series 100 Years, 100 Movies, and 100 Stars for the AFI and now today’s announcement is another example of his creativity, vision and commitment to Dallas.”

AFI DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The citywide event is designed in a hub-and-spoke style, with Victory Park and Victory Plaza, featuring the largest outdoor media screens in the country, as the festival’s headquarters. Victory Park will be home to the festival’s box offices, hospitality areas and numerous supporting events and parties. “This is a tremendous opportunity for both Dallas and its film industry,” said Liener Temerlin, the AFI Dallas Fest founder and chairman. “After careful consideration, it became clear to me and others that now was the right environment, timing and opportunity for a festival of this size and scope. AFI saw the synergy with its own mission, and so began our consulting relationship.” “AFI is fortunate to know Liener Temerlin through his extraordinary service on the AFI board of trustees,” said Jean Picker Firstenberg, president and CEO of AFI. “When Liener approached AFI to consult on a new international festival in the city of Dallas, we did so because of our deep respect for this man and his vision. Today’s announcement is a result of that vision and because we believe that this festival is consistent with the AFI’s mission.”

Screenings, receptions and special events will be held throughout Dallas, connected by free shuttles and convenient public transportation. The festival maximizes the plethora of Dallas’s distinctive venues, making use of Victory Plaza, the historic Majestic Theatre, the Landmark Magnolia and Inwood Theatres, the Angelika Film Centre and the new AMC NorthPark Theaters. In addition to theater venues, the AFI Dallas Fest is in venue subject discussions with the Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, The Crow Collection of Asian Art and Southern Methodist University.

Temerlin has had early discussions with Bill Lively of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts which includes the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and the new Annette Strauss Artist square for venues when they come on stream. In keeping with their corporate generosity Target has offered additional support of the AFI Dallas International Film Festival, by funding the Target Filmmaker Awards. The first $25,000 cash grant will be awarded to the winning filmmaker of the best narrative film. The second $25,000 grant will be given to the winner of the best documentary category. “Victory Park is very pleased to be the home to the AFI Dallas International Film Festival,” said Ross Perot, Jr. chairman of Hillwood Development Corporation. “This festival is an important step in Dallas’s effort to become a leading arts center with another significant film festival and will be instrumental in drawing crowds throughout the city. 37th ANNUAL USA FILM FESTIVAL: April 19 - April 26, 2007: 37th Annual USA Film Festival – Eight-day showcase featuring the best new American and foreign Films, the 29th Annual National Short Film and Video Competition and special tributes. Accomplished directors and actors appear with their new films (50+ visiting filmmakers in attendance with 75+ films) in a setting designed to bring artists together with audiences. Other program highlights include Tribute programs which recognize master artists (directors, actors, writers, composers, cinematographers, etc.). The Competition is open to US made works only, makes several cash awards (no trophies, plaques or other gee-gaws), is administered by an independent national jury of film experts, and is an Academy-qualified program (in the fiction, animation and experimental categories). THE ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL OF DALLAS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting an understanding of Asian culture, supporting and advancing the work of Asian-American artists. We have a shorts festival that normally takes place in May and a separate features festival at the Dallas Museum of Arts and the Magnolia Theater. AFFD has premiered many Asian films in Dallas such as: GREEN DRAGON, JU-ON, TALE OF TWO SISTERS, WEEPING CAMEL and many more. FESTIVAL HISTORY:The Fourth Annual New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival-APRIL 12 - 22, 2007. The New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival was founded in 2004 by a coalition of local organizers and community members, consulting with local organizations including representatives of the ACLU Foundation of Louisiana, Families and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children, New Orleans Palestine Solidarity, New Orleans American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Planned Parenthood of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta, Iron Rail Bookstore and Library, Neighborhood Gallery, Loyola Amnesty International, Zeitgeist Multidisciplinary Arts Center, and more. Although operated by an all-volunteer staff on a shoestring budget, the first annual festival presented a range of local and national premieres including Fourth World War, Until When, Lost Boys of Sudan, Rana's Wedding, and the first New Orleans showing in at least thirty years of Battle of Algiers. The Second Annual New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival presented 35 new films in 17 days and eight venues and featured two world premieres. ROB THOMAS DOCUMENTARY TO OPEN NASHVILLE FILM FESTIVAL; THOMAS TO ATTEND

MY SECRET RECORD: OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BIZ, a documentary focused on singer-songwriter and international recording star Rob Thomas, will headline the opening night of the 38th Nashville Film Festival on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. on two screens at the Regal Green Hills Cinema. Thomas, his wife Marisol and director Gillian Grisman will attend the screening. MY SECRET RECORD: OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BIZ, by American director Grisman, is an engaging documentary that follows Matchbox Twenty member Thomas as he records the solo CD that would debut at #1 on the Billboard charts in late 2005. The film chronicles not only the making of the music but the hype, the marketing, the publicity and all the accompanying frustrations. The result is a very incisive and humorous look at the record industry’s machinations.

ASPIRING FILMMAKER`S COMPETITION
Series Executive-Produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg
ON THE LOT, executive-produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will give aspiring filmmakers from around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks. Airing next spring on FOX, this unscripted series will feature a cast of 16 undiscovered filmmakers who will compete to win the support of the show’s viewers, as their fate will be decided by a weekly audience vote. The competition will air over two nights weekly, with a one-hour “Film Premiere” episode, followed the next night by a half-hour “Box Office” results show. After a global search, applicants will be winnowed to a group of 16 talented filmmakers. These finalists will be brought to Hollywood, where they will be divided into teams and begin the journey toward their “big break.”
Every week, the hopeful filmmakers will produce short films from a chosen genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. They’ll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer -- professional writers, cast and crew, and maybe even Hollywood celebrities. After the teams have battled time frames, budgets and all the usual chaos that goes along with filmmaking, their films will debut and be critiqued in front of a live audience during the “Film Premiere” episode. Judges will include a high-ranking motion picture executive, a prominent film critic and a succession of well-respected guests, such as directors who are experts in the week’s featured genre. But the filmmakers ultimately will be judged by the harshest critics of all … the public. It will be FOX viewers whose votes determine which film should be left on the cutting-room floor. On the next night’s “Box Office” results show, the director whose feature garners the fewest votes will be sent home. The competition continues and directors are eliminated until only the most talented filmmaker is anointed the winner and heads to DreamWorks … ON THE LOT. This years inaugural series will celebrate the life achievement of Marina Goldovskaya, a renowned Russian-American documentary filmmaker and a professor at UCLA in Los Angeles. Ms. Goldovskaya will be present at screenings in Houston/Austin between Feb. 22nd-24th for discussion and will sign her new book WOMAN WITH MOVIE CAMERA. She has also created more that 30 documentaries, over hundred television programs for Russian, French, Austrian, German and American audiences, and has written six books.
